NHA - Taekwondo Classes

Taekwondo Class Information

Please bear in mind that Taekwondo classes are not currently occurring--the class times shown below are merely when we believe we could hold classes, given enough student interest.

General Practice: 2 Saturdays per month, 10am to Noon

Taekwondo Class Costs and Requirements:

Cost: $45 per month tuition for 2 classes per week
Age Requirement: 12 years of age or older

New Student Special: New students pay $135 -- for this they receive three months of training and a free TKD-style uniform and belt. New Students may also choose to pay their initial tuition in two monthly installments: $80 in the first month, and $70 in the second month. The student still receives three months of training and a uniform and belt. In all cases, after the first three months, the tuition reverts back to $45 per month.

Additional Costs: During their Taekwondo studies, if the student wants to compete in the sparring division of a tournament, students will need to buy the following equipment. This is the student's choice, not a requirement for the class.

Protective cup
Mouthguard
Optional: Chest protector

The student may purchase this equipment from any provider they wish. The NHA does have a dealer account with several martial arts equipment suppliers, so they can arrange wholesale prices for students. However, the student is not required to purchase their equipment from the NHA.

Promotional Costs: Taekwondo rank is granted by the USA Tae Kwon-do Federation (our national organization). Students who promote receive local rank certificates from the Nebraska Hapkido Association school, and national certificates from the USA Tae Kwon-do Federation. The rank fees are set by the association, and they start at $55 for the first test, and increase as the rank increases.

Students do not have to pay to test--they merely pay the fee if they take the test and pass, and thus promote to the next rank. These are rank/promotional fees, not testing fees. If they do not pass, no fee is assessed. Testing at lower ranks occurs at a minimum time of 3 months between tests, and the time between tests increases as the rank increases.

Belt Ranking in the USA Tae Kwon-do Federation:

These are the rankings of the belts (and their colors) for the USA Tae Kwon-do Federation. "Low belts" are the ranks up to purple belt, "high belts" are blue belts on up. (Normally blue through red with 1 black stripe, since dan ranks are different.) For all belt ranks below red, a black stripe is added to the belt after the student has attended class at least half the minimum time necessary to promote to the next rank.

Low Belts

10th gup: White Belt
9th gup: White w/black tips
8th gup: Yellow Belt
7th gup: Orange belt
6th gup: Green belt

High Belts

5th gup: Purple belt
4th gup: Blue belt
3rd gup: Brown belt
2nd gup: Red belt
1st gup: Red w/1 black stripe

Black Belt Ranks

Probationary Black (1st dan)

1st dan

2nd dan
3rd and 4th dan simply have
3 and 4 white stripes on them

5th dan

7th dan
7th dan might also only have a gold stripe
in the middle, without the red band.

Time in Grade:
(All times shown are MINIMUM amounts.)

10th gup to 9th: 6 weeks
9th gup to 8th: 6 weeks
8th gup to 7th: 10 weeks
7th gup to 6th: 10 weeks
6th gup to 5th: 10 weeks
5th gup to 4th: 10 weeks
4th gup to 3rd: 20 weeks
3rd gup to 2nd: 20 weeks
2nd gup to 1st: 20 weeks
1st gup to Temp Black: 20 weeks
Temp Black to Decided Black: 6 months

1st dan to 2nd: 2 years
2nd dan to 3rd: 3 years
3rd dan to 4th: 4 years, etc, etc...

Thus, minimum time to 1st dan Decided: 3 years
